U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will directly oversee security in the Strait of Hormuz and reintroduce a special naval blockade targeting Iran.
In a statement posted on his social media account, Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would remain open to global maritime traffic. However, he stated that the renewed "Iranian Blockade" would apply specifically to Iranian vessels and their commercial partners.
According to the statement, all other countries will continue to enjoy free and unrestricted access to the strategic waterway.
Trump also declared that the United States would assume the role of the "Guardian of the Hormuz Strait," taking responsibility for ensuring the security and stability of one of the world's most strategically important maritime routes.
To help cover the costs of maintaining security operations in the region, Trump proposed imposing a 20% transit levy on all goods transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
